What Does Dispel Magic Remove in Deadlock?

Find out what Dispel Magic removes in Deadlock, when to cleanse debuffs and why it cannot save you from every stun or ultimate.

4 min readCleanse explained

Dispel Magic is one of those items that feels incredible when you press it at the right time—and very disappointing when you find out the enemy stun has already taken your keyboard away. The difference is what's on you and whether you can still activate an item.

Quick answer: Dispel Magic removes eligible non-ultimate negative effects already applied to you. It can clear many damage-over-time effects, marks, silences and pending disables, but cannot be activated while Stunned or Slept and does not remove debuffs from ultimates.

What does Dispel Magic remove?

SituationDispel MagicKey detail
Bebop Sticky BombYesActivate before detonation; the bomb is dropped rather than staying attached
Pending KnockdownYesRemove the debuff before the delayed stun lands
Eligible non-ultimate silenceYesOnly if item activation is still available
Selected damaging or weakening marksOftenCheck the specific hero ability and upgrade
Nurse Harrow attached leechesYes, where the removable attached effect appliesThis does not clear her ultimate's fear
Already stunned or sleptNo usable activationYou can't press the item from inside that state
Ultimate debuffsNoThe item excludes them by design
All control effects and item locksNoSome effects deny the activation you would need

Important: An effect being purple, scary or annoying doesn't guarantee Dispel Magic removes it. The source of the debuff matters.

How to use Dispel Magic against Bebop

If Bebop attaches Sticky Bomb, you have a decision window before it detonates. Use Dispel Magic while you can act, then change position. Removing the bomb does not protect you from a follow-up hook or his teammates' damage.

This is the kind of matchup where Dispel Magic earns its slot: a repeated, identifiable debuff is costing you fights, and an active cleanse changes the result. See Bebop counterplay.

Does Dispel Magic work on Knockdown?

Yes—before the stun. Knockdown applies a delayed effect, giving you a brief moment to remove its pending debuff. Once you're already stunned, Dispel Magic cannot be activated to escape.

Treat this as a race against the stun resolution, not a magic button that works after every mistake. See How to Counter Knockdown for the full comparison with Counterspell, Unstoppable and Indomitable.

What about Nurse Harrow's leeches?

Dispel Magic can remove attached leech effects, which matters when repeated leech pressure is draining your resources and setting up Harrow's sustain. Do it while the removable effect is present and you're still free to activate items.

Do not confuse that with her ultimate. Clearing a leech debuff does not mean you're protected from Lurking Terrors' fear. See Nurse Harrow counters.

What Dispel Magic does NOT do

It does not prevent a new stun from being applied after your cleanse. It does not remove ultimate debuffs. It does not automatically save you from a stun or sleep that has already locked your actions. And it does not make bad positioning safe.

For a planned enemy control chain, Unstoppable may be a better answer. For a readable incoming hit, Counterspell can be more appropriate. Different jobs, different buttons.

When is Dispel Magic worth buying?

Buy it when the enemy has a specific removable debuff that repeatedly costs you a trade, forces you away from the wave, or sets up lethal damage. It is even more attractive when it answers several recurring debuffs on the opposing lineup.

Do not buy it simply because “the enemy has stuns.” Ask: Will I have an activation window, and is the threatening effect actually removable? If not, prioritize prevention, durability or positioning instead.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing Dispel Magic only after a stun has landed.
  • Expecting it to remove ultimate effects.
  • Assuming every silence, disarm and item lock is interchangeable.
  • Cleansing successfully and then standing in the same dangerous spot.
  • Buying a cleanse without identifying which enemy effect it is meant to answer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dispel Magic remove Knockdown in Deadlock?
Yes, when the pending non-ultimate debuff is still active. It cannot be activated after the stun has already landed.
Can Dispel Magic remove Bebop's bomb?
Yes. Using it before Sticky Bomb detonates removes the attached effect and drops the bomb.
Does Dispel Magic remove ultimate debuffs?
No. The item's cleanse excludes ultimate negative effects.
Can you use Dispel Magic while stunned?
No. A stun or sleep prevents the item activation, which is why timing matters so much.
Is Dispel Magic better than Unstoppable?
Neither is universally better. Dispel Magic reacts to removable debuffs; Unstoppable proactively protects a planned window from crowd control.
