How to Counter Knockdown in Deadlock

Remove the delayed stun, protect the important moment, or avoid giving the enemy a free catch.

6 min readPractical matchup guide

Knockdown is dangerous because it gives the enemy time to prepare for a stun, especially when you are airborne. That same delay gives you an opportunity to respond. Choose the answer you can use reliably, then change your position before the enemy follows up.

Quick answer: Dispel Magic removes Knockdown’s pending debuff before the stun lands. Counterspell can block the incoming item effect with a timed parry; Unstoppable prevents the stun while active; Indomitable can automatically answer it when ready. None of these items makes you immune to the rest of the enemy team. Facing several threats at once? Try the Counter Item Helper.

Best Items to Counter Knockdown

You do not need every defensive item below. Choose the one that fits your reaction time, build and the other crowd control on the enemy team.

Dispel Magic
Problem you’re facing
Knockdown has marked you, but the stun has not landed.
Good fit when
Activate during the delay to remove the pending Knockdown debuff, then reposition.
Watch for
It does not remove a stun that has already landed, and cannot be activated while stunned or slept.
Counterspell
Problem you’re facing
You can read an incoming Knockdown and time a spell parry.
Good fit when
Use the enhanced parry to block the relevant item effect instead of relying on a cleanse.
Watch for
A mistimed parry leaves you exposed; it does not purge a debuff that is already applied.
Unstoppable
Problem you’re facing
A Knockdown stun keeps interrupting a planned engage, escape or channel.
Good fit when
Activate it before the stun resolves so your important action is protected.
Watch for
You cannot activate it while stunned or slept, and you can still take damage.
Indomitable
Problem you’re facing
A single hard-control opener repeatedly catches you before you can react.
Good fit when
If ready, its automatic protection can cleanse the Knockdown stun and give you a chance to act.
Watch for
Another qualifying disable can consume it first; it is not permanent crowd-control immunity.

How Does Knockdown Work?

Knockdown is an active item that marks a target and applies a stun after a two-second delay. Airborne targets are stunned longer and are pulled toward the ground when the stun hits. It has a 45-meter cast range, so a flying hero can be threatened even when they feel safely above the fight.

The key is to recognize the mark before the stun triggers. A pending effect and an active stun are different problems. Dispel Magic answers the first; once you are stunned, you cannot rely on pressing it to escape.

Use Dispel Magic Before the Stun

If you see Knockdown applied to you, use Dispel Magic during the delay while you can still activate items. It removes the pending non-ultimate debuff, preventing that Knockdown stun from arriving. Do not wait for the impact animation: after the stun lands, the cleanse is too late.

The cleanse also creates an opening to get back to cover or toward your team. Removing Knockdown does not make you immune to other stuns, damage or a second control item.

Counterspell, Unstoppable or Indomitable?

Counterspell is the timing-based option. Its enhanced parry can protect against enemy item effects when you read the incoming commitment. It is less straightforward than clearing a visible pending debuff, so practise the timing before treating it as your main escape.

Unstoppable is the proactive option. If you are about to fly, channel or dive into a team holding Knockdown, activate it so the protection covers the dangerous moment. Pressing it after the stun has started will not work. You still need enough health, spacing or team help to survive incoming damage.

Indomitable is the automatic option. It can answer a qualifying stun without requiring a perfectly timed active. The trade-off is control: an earlier silence, root or other qualifying effect may trigger it before Knockdown reaches you. Watch its availability instead of assuming it will always save you.

How to Avoid Knockdown Without Buying an Item

Respect enemies carrying Knockdown before committing to a long flight or an exposed channel. Use cover and distance to deny the initial cast, keep an escape option available, and avoid hovering high over a fight when a stun would leave you isolated.

If you are already marked, retreat toward a position your team can defend and respond during the delay. Running around a wall does not automatically remove a debuff that has already been applied. If you have no cleanse or immunity, your best option may be to limit the damage that follows instead of trying to continue your attack.

How to Handle Knockdown in Real Matchups

Vindicta or Grey Talon keeps getting grounded

Before taking a long airborne angle, check whether the enemy has Knockdown ready. Keep Dispel Magic or a rehearsed Counterspell available for the mark, or take a shorter flight that does not leave you exposed when the stun lands.

Seven or Haze loses a channeled ultimate

Expect opponents to save Knockdown for the channel. Start the commitment from a safer angle, bait the item first if possible, or use Unstoppable before the interruption window rather than after you are stunned.

The enemy follows Knockdown with another disable

Do not assume one cleanse or automatic protection wins the whole sequence. Preserve space from the second controller and ask a teammate to cover your retreat if the first answer is forced out.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to activate Dispel Magic after the stun has landed.
  • Using Unstoppable too late, after you have lost control of your hero.
  • Treating Counterspell as a cleanse instead of a timing-based parry.
  • Assuming Indomitable is still ready after another qualifying disable.
  • Expecting Debuff Reducer to reliably shorten Knockdown’s stun; the currently documented interaction says it does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dispel Magic remove Knockdown in Deadlock?
Yes. Dispel Magic can purge the pending Knockdown debuff before its delayed stun activates. It cannot remove the stun once you are already stunned.
Can you Counterspell Knockdown?
Counterspell can defend against enemy item effects with a correctly timed enhanced parry. It is a timing response, not a way to remove the Knockdown mark after application.
Does Unstoppable counter Knockdown?
Yes, if its protection is active when the stun would hit. Unstoppable cannot be activated while stunned or slept, and it does not stop the enemy from damaging you.
Does Indomitable stop Knockdown?
Indomitable can automatically answer Knockdown’s qualifying stun if its protection is ready. An earlier qualifying control effect can use that protection first.
Does Debuff Reducer shorten Knockdown?
The current Deadlock Wiki documents Knockdown’s stun as unaffected by Debuff Resist. Do not depend on Debuff Reducer for this specific stun unless the interaction is confirmed to have changed.
Can you avoid Knockdown without an item?
You can play outside its cast range, use cover to stop the initial cast, bait its cooldown, or choose a safer engagement. Once the debuff has been applied, hiding behind a wall is not a guaranteed way to remove it.
