Best Items to Counter Shiv

Matchup Overview & Game Plan

Prepare for the melee after a dash and keep moving through the delayed second hit when rage is full. Clean stacked debuffs before starting another exchange. Anti-heal supports the prolonged fight, but does not remove the need to avoid the burst and repeated close-range sequence.

Dispel Magic removes the stacked effects, Spellbreaker reduces both burst and debuff duration, and anti-heal prevents him from stabilizing through extended fights.

Laning Phase

  • Avoid giving repeated knife hits an uninterrupted lane trade; reset layered debuff pressure before recommitting.
  • Prepare for a light melee after the dash rather than assuming the dash itself is a melee parry target.
  • Keep moving through the delayed second dash hit when his rage is full.
  • Choose spirit defense for burst and a reliable anti-heal source for the extended sustain exchange.

Most Common Problems vs Shiv

Identify what is losing the exchange, then use the answer and timing below.

Knives, Decay, and dash debuffs are stacking at once

Dispel Magic

What to do: Purge the stacked non-ultimate debuffs with Dispel Magic.

Why it helps: Shiv is most dangerous when several effects overlap, so clearing them together creates much more value than cleansing one small effect early.

His spirit burst is chunking too much health at once

Spellbreaker

What to do: Build Spellbreaker.

Why it helps: The item reduces the large spirit chunk and its debuff resistance also shortens several of the effects that make the follow-up lethal.

Killing Blow is executing you when low

Counterspell

What to do: Counterspell the execute dash if you can read the timing.

Why it helps: Preventing the ability damage/effects removes the conversion tool Shiv relies on once you reach execute range.

Shiv keeps healing or stabilizing through extended fights

Healbane

What to do: Apply Healbane or another anti-heal source before the long trade.

Why it helps: Shiv gets far more value when fights drag on and he can recover around deferred damage, so healing reduction makes the eventual burst much more likely to stick.

Gameplay Counterplay

  • Expect a light melee after his dash and be willing to parry when he repeatedly uses the same sequence.
  • At full rage, keep moving through the dash exchange; the delayed second hit punishes players who stop in the original impact spot.
  • Do not let multiple knife and dash debuffs sit on you if you are about to re-enter a fight.

Mistakes to Avoid Against Shiv

Stopping after the first dash hit

There is a delayed second hit at full rage. Keep moving instead of treating the first contact as the end of the attack.

Starting a new fight with knife and dash debuffs still layered

Reset or cleanse that pressure before recommitting so the next exchange starts from a more manageable state.
