How to Counter Burst Comps in Deadlock

Survive the damage window that decides the fight, then punish the cooldowns they spent. Match your defense to the actual combo and keep a safe reset available.

Common threatsLady GeistHazePocketSeven

Identify the damage type and the setup that makes the combo reliable. Use timed invulnerability or spell protection when you can react; choose passive defense or a barrier when the window is too sudden.

Best counter items against burst teams

Ethereal Shift
When to buy

Choose it when a predictable short combo is the lethal part of the fight.

Watch for

Time the protection for the actual damage and make sure your return position is covered.

Counterspell
When to buy

Choose it when the spell threat has a timing you can respond to reliably.

Watch for

Practice the specific sequence. It is a timing answer rather than permanent protection against all damage.

Spirit Resilience
When to buy

Choose it when passive protection is more dependable than a reactive active against repeated spell damage.

Watch for

Pair resistance with cover and an escape route; the attacker’s follow-up may still matter.

Reactive Barrier
When to buy

Choose it when a qualifying disable starts the burst and you need to survive the follow-up.

Watch for

The protection gives you time to respond or receive a save; it does not remove the setup itself.

Metal Skin
When to buy

Choose it when gun damage, rather than spirit or melee, is the main payoff.

Watch for

Use the bullet-immunity window to reposition or fight from safety. Do not expect it to cover every damage type in a mixed combo.

Choose the item that answers the recurring threat and fits your hero. These are situational options, not a five-item shopping list.

Identify the combo

Find the setup and lethal damage source.

Cover the payoff

Keep a response for the real damage window.

Punish the cooldowns

Re-enter when their commitment has failed.

How to recognise this team style

Burst describes the timing of damage, not a single damage type. A short spell combo, concentrated gun pressure after control, or a close-range sequence can all feel like a sudden kill.

Check whether the burst arrives directly or after a predictable mark, hook or other catch. Preventing that setup may be more efficient than stacking defense against every part of the follow-up.

Positioning and approach

Do not stand where the enemy can begin the combo without spending anything. Use cover and keep a teammate able to respond. When a setup is applied, change your route toward help instead of moving farther into isolation.

Choose an escape destination before the catch. If a reactive item is your plan, confirm that the setup leaves you an activation window. Passive defense may be the more reliable answer when the first control removes your actions.

Teamfight decisions

Hold your response for the payoff rather than spending it on the first small hit. The attacker may be waiting for that defensive tool to expire before using the real damage.

After surviving, track what the enemy spent to deliver the combo. Reset behind cover or coordinate a punish while their damage or escape is unavailable. Do not chase immediately if you are still low and their teammates can finish the exchange.

Heroes that can contribute to this style

Violet can contribute follow-up damage when a teammate creates a clear target, but the strength of that burst depends on her build and the exchange. Her main classification remains ranged pressure and control.

These are examples of the threat, not a fixed draft recipe. Builds and team decisions change the way these heroes contribute. For split-push especially, look at the map behaviour rather than treating the tag as a permanent hero role.

Common mistakes

  • Buying bullet immunity for a mainly spirit combo.
  • Spending invulnerability on minor poke just before the payoff.
  • Surviving the first combo, then chasing into the next source of damage.

Frequently asked questions

Should you buy resistance or an active against burst?
Use a timed active when the payoff is predictable and you can act reliably. Passive defense is more dependable when the catch is sudden or prevents activation.
Does Metal Skin counter all burst damage?
No. It provides a bullet-defense window. Check whether spirit damage, melee or another part of the combo is what actually kills you.
What should you do after surviving a burst combo?
Move to safety or punish the spent cooldowns with teammates. A failed enemy combo is an opening, but a low-health solo chase can throw it away.
