How to Counter Poke Comps in Deadlock

Break the sight line, protect your resources, and approach from an angle that does not cost half your health before the fight starts.

Move between cover, clear the wave or setup safely, and avoid repeated trades into the same firing lane. Buy defense for the damage that actually lands, then coordinate a catch or a different approach.

Best counter items against poke teams

Healing Rite
When to buy

Choose it early when chip damage forces you away from the wave but you can find a safe recovery window.

Watch for

Retreat to a protected position instead of trying to recover while the same poke keeps connecting.

Spirit Resilience
When to buy

Choose it when ability damage repeatedly chips you down before you can contribute.

Watch for

Use the protection to hold a useful angle; it does not make every exposed crossing safe.

Weapon Shielding
When to buy

Choose it when sustained gun hits, rather than spell burst, are denying a useful approach.

Watch for

Check the item’s protection window and keep cover available for the damage it does not cover.

Knockdown
When to buy

Choose it when an airborne damage dealer keeps using an unreachable firing position.

Watch for

Coordinate the delayed stun with teammates who can reach the landing; check enemy protection before committing.

Warp Stone
When to buy

Choose it when one short reposition can get you behind cover or into a useful angle.

Watch for

Choose the destination first. Reaching the enemy alone may only give them an easier kill.

Choose the item that answers the recurring threat and fits your hero. These are situational options, not a five-item shopping list.

Deny free hits

Use cover and leave predictable peeks.

Clear the pressure

Keep waves and summons from pinning you down.

Change the angle

Catch or flank with follow-up in reach.

How to recognise this team style

Poke teams win the approach before a full fight starts. Ranged shots, repeated spells, turrets or prepared zones make your team lose health while trying to reach a useful position.

Inspect the damage pattern. A flying hero can deal sustained weapon damage, while another ranged build relies on spirit burst. The same “poke” label does not justify one resistance purchase for everyone.

Positioning and approach

Cross open space in short, planned movements. Break line of sight when a charged shot or dangerous ability is ready instead of repeatedly returning to the same corner. Overhead cover matters against aerial firing angles.

Clear waves and summons from safety where possible. If you let the setup accumulate, the enemy can hold an approach while objectives take damage. Arrive before the area is fully prepared rather than walking into a finished siege at low health.

Teamfight decisions

Look for an approach that makes the ranged threat reposition. A coordinated catch or second angle is stronger than a solo chase through their team. Make sure someone can finish the target once it loses its safe perch.

If the enemy spends a major poke spell without gaining a catch, use the gap to move or clear pressure. Do not wait for every cooldown to return before trying the exact same route again.

Heroes that can contribute to this style

Violet adds steerable empowered shots and brush pressure. Approach through cover, avoid lining up along the brush path, and deny her sustained view before Still Life completes.

These are examples of the threat, not a fixed draft recipe. Builds and team decisions change the way these heroes contribute. For split-push especially, look at the map behaviour rather than treating the tag as a permanent hero role.

Common mistakes

  • Peeking the same sight line repeatedly while a charged attack is available.
  • Buying only spirit defense without checking a ranged hero’s weapon build.
  • Diving the backline alone while teammates remain trapped behind the setup.

Frequently asked questions

Should you buy bullet or spirit defense against poke?
Match the purchase to the actual damage. Ranged gun pressure and ability poke need different protection, even when they come from the same hero.
Does Knockdown counter every poke team?
No. It is particularly useful when an airborne target gives your team a reachable landing window. It does not replace cover or wave control against ground-based siege.
How do you approach a poke comp?
Clear immediate pressure from cover, then use a cooldown gap or another angle with teammates who can follow. Avoid crossing the whole firing lane alone at low health.
