How to Counter Dive Comps in Deadlock

Keep your backline within reach, make the first engage expensive, and punish divers after they spend their movement.

Common threatsAbramsYamatoCalicoBilly

Stay close enough to help each other without stacking into the same engage. Keep an escape or defensive active for the first commitment, then use control and focused damage after the diver spends movement.

Best counter items against dive teams

Slowing Hex
When to buy

Choose it when affected movement abilities let the diver reach your backline or leave for free.

Watch for

Apply before the movement you need to prevent. A delayed response after the dive has landed may not save the target.

Warp Stone
When to buy

Choose it when changing your angle can avoid the engage and keep your damage available.

Watch for

Plan a safe destination near cover or teammates; do not blink into another enemy’s follow-up.

Ethereal Shift
When to buy

Choose it when a predictable damage sequence is deciding the catch.

Watch for

Time the invulnerability for the payoff. Your team still needs to cover the position where you will return.

Rescue Beam
When to buy

Choose it when you can safely reach an ally caught by the engage.

Watch for

Hold a useful angle and time the pull so the ally leaves the danger instead of returning straight into it.

Healbane
When to buy

Choose it when a diver’s healing keeps them alive through focused damage and you apply spirit damage reliably.

Watch for

Apply before committing the damage; anti-heal does not stop the initial engage.

Choose the item that answers the recurring threat and fits your hero. These are situational options, not a five-item shopping list.

Keep help in reach

Play around cover and a teammate who can peel.

Make them commit

Save movement for the engage you need to avoid.

Punish the exit

Focus a diver once escape or protection is spent.

How to recognise this team style

Watch how the fight starts: do enemies bypass the frontline and reach a vulnerable damage dealer? Repeated short-range commitments are a clearer signal than simply counting mobile heroes.

A team with one diver may still play around poke or picks. Prepare for the actual engage you are seeing, and check whether the diver’s damage is mainly weapon, spirit or melee.

Positioning and approach

Use a position where another teammate can respond without both of you being caught by the same area control. Cover, changes in elevation and a planned route out make the diver spend more to reach a clean target.

Keep a defensive cooldown for the important commitment. If you spend it on small poke, the dive can arrive during the gap. A support should be close enough to save or interrupt while holding a different angle from the threatened carry.

Teamfight decisions

Call which movement or defensive spell the diver has spent. That is the point where a catch becomes easier to finish. Avoid splitting your damage across several enemies if one committed diver is now exposed.

Do not chase a retreating frontline so far that the next diver reaches your backline unopposed. A successful defense can be enough to reclaim space and pressure an objective while the enemy’s engage tools are unavailable.

Heroes that can contribute to this style

These are examples of the threat, not a fixed draft recipe. Builds and team decisions change the way these heroes contribute. For split-push especially, look at the map behaviour rather than treating the tag as a permanent hero role.

Common mistakes

  • Standing alone beyond the range of your team’s saves.
  • Using your escape for minor poke before the main engage.
  • Buying anti-heal when the immediate problem is dying before you can act.

Frequently asked questions

What items counter dive teams in Deadlock?
Choose the answer to the actual engage: Slowing Hex for affected movement, Warp Stone for a safe reposition, Ethereal Shift for a committed damage window, or Rescue Beam for an ally save. Add anti-heal if recovery prevents the punish.
Should you group against dive?
Stay close enough to help without sharing one area catch. Use separate angles around the same cover and keep a safe route for the threatened player.
Does one mobile hero make a dive comp?
No. Judge how several enemies combine their approach and follow-up. A mobile hero can also play for isolated picks or pressure from another angle.
