How to play Kelvin

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Keep teammates healthy and make enemies struggle to approach or keep shooting. Use your mobility to arrive at useful fights, then control who gets to keep attacking inside them.

Positioning

Play close enough to help an ally with grenades and beam pressure, usually beside or behind the teammate taking first contact. Keep cover nearby against distant guns. Before using Frozen Shelter, check which allies and enemies will be inside and whose shots it will block.

How to fight

  1. Aim Frost Grenade where it can help an ally while threatening an enemy. Arctic Beam becomes more disruptive when you can maintain contact, so choose a reachable threat rather than sweeping it randomly across distant targets. Use your gun when a safe shooting opportunity is available.
  2. Ice Path helps your team reach an angle or leave a bad fight; do not travel so far ahead that nobody can benefit. Frozen Shelter can create recovery time or isolate a fight, but trapping a vulnerable teammate beside a stronger close fighter is a poor save.

When an enemy threatens you

Slow the pursuer and move back towards cover or allies. Use shelter with a plan for the fight inside it, rather than treating it as a button that automatically makes every dangerous situation safe.

Kelvin game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and aim Frost Grenade to help your partner while threatening an enemy. Use cover when maintaining Arctic Beam would expose you.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Help teammates reach the next contest with Ice Path. Keep collecting nearby income and avoid arriving so far ahead that you must fight alone.

Late game

~25+ min

Slow immediate threats and use shelter with a deliberate plan. Check who is inside and whether the dome blocks your damage dealers from helping.

Tips

Good to know

  • Frozen Shelter's dome is impenetrable — cast it between your team and theirs to divide the fight.
  • Dash or crouch on your own Ice Path to climb to vertical spots other heroes can't reach.
  • At max rank the dome purges debuffs from allies inside, so time it against enemy crowd control.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Trapping an ally inside Frozen Shelter with a stronger enemy.
  • Blocking allied shooting or relying on healing against heavy healing reduction.

If you’re struggling

Protect allies with slows and shelter rather than assuming you can win every close fight.

One useful tip

Frozen Shelter can block your own team’s shots or trap an ally with a stronger close fighter. Check who is inside.

Matchups to watch

Heroes that change how you play Kelvin. Situational adjustments, not rankings.

HazeOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

Her gun damage needs a sustained shooting window.

Do this

Use beam disruption and protection on the immediate threat, but avoid a dome that blocks your own allies from helping.

AbramsThreat · Teamfights
Watch for

Shelter can leave a vulnerable ally inside a close fight Abrams wants.

Do this

Check who is inside before casting; use distance and slows instead of automatically enclosing the whole attack.

VindictaThreat · Lane
Watch for

Her distant firing angles can sit outside a useful beam exchange.

Do this

Collect souls from cover and use protected movement to change the angle rather than chasing straight through her shots.
