How to play Shiv

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Build pressure before a close fight, then help finish wounded enemies. Your damage management gives you opportunities to keep fighting, but it does not remove the need to watch health and incoming threats.

Positioning

Play around the front edge or side of your team where you can reach a target without being surrounded. Use cover while building pressure. Keep a route back to allied help instead of dashing so far ahead that a finishing opportunity becomes a solo fight.

How to fight

  1. Use Serrated Knives to build pressure, then look for a close Slice and Dice exchange while your resources are favourable. Mix shotgun damage with your abilities. An enemy already fighting your teammate is a better commitment than someone waiting with every defensive tool ready.
  2. Bloodletting delays some damage, so account for what is still waiting to arrive instead of reading only your visible health. Killing Blow can finish a sufficiently wounded enemy, but do not chase the next target automatically if allies are falling back or your resources are exhausted.

When an enemy threatens you

Break off towards cover and teammates before the delayed damage becomes fatal. When behind, keep knife pressure and help finish an already weakened target instead of trying to prove you can survive a full-health duel.

Shiv game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and build pressure with controlled knife attacks. Watch delayed damage rather than treating every apparently favourable health bar as safe.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Approach with your fighting resources ready and allies in reach. Choose a target you can maintain contact with without becoming surrounded.

Late game

~25+ min

Look for a safe Killing Blow finish after allies and your pressure weaken someone. Reassess health and backup before following another target.

Tips

Good to know

  • Headshots build rage 1.65x faster than bodyshots — aim high while farming rage.
  • Bloodletting is affected by healing modifiers, so enemy anti-heal guts it — and Pocket's Affliction at 1 HP can kill you straight through it.
  • Executing with Killing Blow fully refills your rage meter and lets you recast for 16s — chain executes to win fights.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Ignoring damage still waiting to arrive through Bloodletting.
  • Chasing a finishing opportunity beyond your team’s help.

If you’re struggling

Maintain knife pressure and finish weakened targets near teammates instead of initiating a full-health duel.

One useful tip

Your health bar does not tell the whole story when damage is still waiting to arrive.

Matchups to watch

Heroes that change how you play Shiv. Situational adjustments, not rankings.

Lady GeistThreat · Mid-game skirmishes
Watch for

Chasing her low health into close range can enable a reversal.

Do this

Keep pressure from a useful angle and account for Soul Exchange before spending your approach on a finish.

VindictaThreat · Lane
Watch for

Distance and elevation can deny your close damage sequence.

Do this

Collect souls from cover and wait for a reachable fight instead of chasing through repeated ranged shots.

McGinnisOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

A committed firing position can create a predictable close target.

Do this

Approach with allies through a safe route; do not dash past her wall into an isolated fight among the setup.
