How to play McGinnis

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Use your gun, wall and prepared position to help your team hold ground or take an objective. Turrets add pressure, but they do not replace shooting, collecting souls or choosing a safe position.

Positioning

Play behind your team’s close fighters with cover nearby and a retreat route. Set up around ground your team actually wants to use. Spread turrets enough that one area attack does not remove everything, and avoid placing them where enemies can destroy them for free.

How to fight

  1. Keep your machine gun working on a useful target. Spectral Wall can separate one enemy from help, block an approach or protect your retreat; check that it does not block your own teammates from attacking. Medicinal Specter helps allies keep using the position you are defending.
  2. Prepare before an objective fight instead of dropping everything while already surrounded. Use Heavy Barrage from a protected angle when enemies must cross or remain in its area, but keep your build in mind: a gun-focused plan should not wait passively for a turret or ultimate setup.

When an enemy threatens you

Use wall placement, cover and your teammates to create distance. Avoid trying to rebuild a whole setup while a close attacker is already on you; survival comes before defending a turret position alone.

McGinnis game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and keep shooting alongside a defensible setup. Use wall placement carefully so your partner can still attack or retreat.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Move with useful lane pressure and prepare objective ground. Keep using your machine gun and heal instead of waiting passively behind turrets.

Late game

~25+ min

Help the team hold a firing position with walls, shooting and spread-out turrets. Retreat with allies if the prepared ground is no longer defensible.

Tips

Good to know

  • Pre-spin your minigun before rounding corners — it takes two seconds to reach full fire rate.
  • Spectral Wall's eruption can be triggered early by firing or recasting, so don't wait for the full duration.
  • Wall upgrades can deploy two extra Mini Turrets — fortify the position before the fight, not during.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Setting up alone beyond your team’s help.
  • Blocking allies with a wall or letting enemies clear every turret together.

If you’re struggling

Defend useful ground and clear safe waves; avoid setting up alone far past allied help.

One useful tip

Do not stop collecting souls or shooting because you placed turrets. Gun and turret builds have different priorities.

Matchups to watch

Heroes that change how you play McGinnis. Situational adjustments, not rankings.

PocketThreat · Teamfights
Watch for

A side attack can bypass the prepared front and threaten you directly.

Do this

Keep a defensive wall angle and spread the setup; watch the sides instead of focusing only on the turret firing line.

VindictaThreat · Lane
Watch for

Long-range shooting can pressure an exposed setup without approaching it.

Do this

Use cover for yourself and useful turret placement; do not walk into open fire to defend every turret.

AbramsOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

He must approach close to threaten your team.

Do this

Use wall placement to make that approach awkward and keep shooting with allies, without trapping your own teammate beside him.
