Deadlock Laning Guide: Counter Poke, Melee and Sustain

Use cover, sustain and cooldown windows first; buy a small answer to the recurring trade.

8 min readPractical matchup guide

A good lane counter helps you keep farming and avoid repeated deaths. Start with the trading pattern—poke, close-range pressure, summons or sustain—then buy a small answer that supports better positioning.

Early lane counters by pressure type

Start with the problem you need to solve. These are situational choices, not a list to buy in full.

Extra Regen
Problem you’re facing
Repeated lane poke leaves you too low to farm safely.
Good fit when
You lose health across repeated trades but can take cover and recover between them.
Watch for
It will not save you from burst that kills you before you can disengage and regenerate.
Healing Rite
Problem you’re facing
You have lost too much health to stay in lane and need a recovery window.
Good fit when
You can step out of enemy pressure and complete a safe recovery before returning to farm.
Watch for
You need a safe recovery window. It is not an emergency answer to damage that is already killing you.
Rebuttal
Problem you’re facing
Enemy melee attacks keep winning close-range lane trades.
Good fit when
Parryable melee attacks are deciding your trades and you can reliably time your parry.
Watch for
The parry benefits require a successful parry. Do not treat every dash or ability hit as a melee attack.
Monster Rounds
Problem you’re facing
Enemy summons or turrets create too much pressure for you to farm safely.
Good fit when
You need faster weapon-based clearing of minions, turrets or summons to protect your farm.
Watch for
Better NPC clear does not make you safe from the hero behind the summons; use cover while clearing.

Work out how the lane is taking your health

The supplied lane guide groups pressure by how it reaches you: direct line of sight, close-range threat, poke, summons and sustain. A hero can occupy several categories. Identify the ability or trading pattern causing trouble rather than trying to memorize one fixed answer per hero.

If ordinary gunfire is winning the exchange, shorten exposure and use cover. If an area spell reaches around cover, choose a different position instead of repeating the same trade. Preserve stamina for the next meaningful threat.

Make poke a recoverable trade

Extra Regen or Healing Rite can help keep a difficult poke lane playable. Sustain works best when you also reduce the amount of damage you take. Repeatedly stepping into the same cast while relying on regeneration can still leave you too low to contest souls.

Bait a spell with a brief exposure, move before it connects, then use its cooldown to farm or pressure. Against abilities that bounce or cover an area, avoid cramped positions that give the enemy easy value. You do not need to win every exchange to leave lane with a usable build.

Respect melee and protect your parry

Against close-range pressure, keep an escape route and avoid spending all your movement on a harmless exchange. Parry is an important tool against melee attacks. Rebuttal is worth comparing when parry opportunities are a recurring part of the matchup, especially into melee-focused Abrams or Billy.

Baba’s Granny Longlegs attacks are also discussed as parry opportunities in the supplied guide. Do not assume every successful parry produces an identical punish window: its heavy attack is described differently from the light attack. Use the dedicated Baba page for that matchup.

Turn summons and sustain into a farming plan

Against summons, prioritize clearing pressure safely and collecting the resources available rather than fighting into a prepared wave. Monster Rounds is a candidate to compare in the McGinnis matchup. Clearing the lane can create the room you need for a better trade.

Against healers, repeated damage that fully recovers may gain little. Against a shield, consider baiting it with a small commitment and trading after it expires. Buy a small lane answer when it preserves farm or prevents a recurring death, then return to the core items that let your hero contribute after lane.

How to use these counters in real matchups

Billy keeps finding close-range trades

Keep stamina for the meaningful approach and protect your parry timing. Compare Rebuttal when melee is the recurring issue rather than buying it because Billy is simply in the lane.

McGinnis prepares pressure before the trade

Clear safely, compare Monster Rounds and collect the available farm. Fighting through her prepared pressure can give her the exchange she wants.

Common counter-buy mistakes

  • Using all your stamina before the enemy commits.
  • Taking trades a healer can recover from at no meaningful cost.
  • Buying several lane answers and losing your first core spike.

Frequently asked questions

Should you buy anti-heal during the laning phase?
Consider it when healing is the specific problem and your hero can apply the effect. If you cannot threaten a kill, safer farming and a core purchase may be a better use of limited souls.
How do you counter melee heroes in lane?
Preserve spacing, stamina and a route out of the trade. Use parries against applicable melee attacks, and compare Rebuttal when those opportunities repeatedly decide the lane.
