Compare Spirit Shielding for a useful barrier after a spirit burst, Spirit Resilience for recurring pressure, and Spellbreaker for dangerous spirit hits. Use a cleanse for removable effects or timed defense to avoid a specific commitment.

Choose for the problem you are facing; these are alternatives to compare, not a full shopping list.
Spirit Shielding- Problem you’re facing
- An opening spirit burst leaves you unable to survive the follow-up.
- Good fit when
- The spirit-damage trigger reliably gives you a barrier and time to improve your position.
- Watch for
- It responds to the trigger rather than stopping the opening ability. Follow-up control may still catch you.
Spirit Resilience- Problem you’re facing
- Repeated spirit damage forces you out of fights.
- Good fit when
- You need consistent passive defense against the opponent’s actual spirit-damage build.
- Watch for
- It does not remove damage-over-time effects or prevent the disable that starts the combo.
Spellbreaker- Problem you’re facing
- A large spirit hit is deciding fights despite your existing defense.
- Good fit when
- Its spirit defense and periodic burst protection address the hit you need to survive.
- Watch for
- An earlier qualifying hit can spend the burst-protection effect. Check its availability before committing.
Counterspell- Problem you’re facing
- A predictable ability-damage moment is deciding the exchange.
- Good fit when
- You can recognize the threat and time your defensive response for the actual hit.
- Watch for
- A mistimed response can leave the important hit unanswered. The enemy may bait your timing.
Dispel Magic- Problem you’re facing
- A removable burn or other debuff keeps damaging you.
- Good fit when
- The effect is removable and you can cast before its damage decides the fight.
- Watch for
- It is not a universal answer to instant burst, every ultimate or a disable that prevents item use.
Identify the spirit damage that is killing you
Separate the initial hit from what follows. An enemy may start with control, add spirit burst and finish with gunfire. Look at the build and the recurring exchange before choosing a purchase. A spirit-defense item should answer a meaningful part of the damage rather than the fact that the hero has abilities.
Gunfire can also carry spirit pressure. Baba’s Thread Sap is described in the supplied guide as adding spirit damage to shots. Buying only weapon defense because the enemy is shooting can therefore miss the source that is winning the trade.
Counter spirit burst with a useful survival window
Spirit Shielding is an option when a spirit burst reliably triggers a barrier before the follow-up kills you. Take cover or improve your position while the protection lasts. Spellbreaker is another option to compare when a large spirit hit remains decisive, with attention to its periodic protection.
For a predictable committed hit, compare Counterspell or Ethereal Shift with passive defense. These depend on timing and a plan for the next position. If you are already caught and unable to activate an item, the setup may need its own answer.
Handle sustained damage and removable burns
When spirit pressure repeats across exchanges, consistent resistance may be more useful than relying on one brief defensive window. Spirit Resilience is a candidate to compare. Extra lane sustain may also help when the damage is recoverable and you can reduce exposure between trades.
A removable burn is a different problem from damage that has already landed. Dispel Magic is discussed in the supplied guides for Infernus’s Afterburn. Cleanse timing can change that exchange, but a cleanse does not undo every source of damage or replace safe positioning.
Prevent the combo instead of only absorbing it
If mobility lets a caster enter, deliver a combo and escape, movement control may create a better team response. If a defensive or damage ability must be prevented before it starts, compare cast denial. Be specific about what you want to stop; a silence is not automatically an interrupt for an existing channel.
Spirit Sap offers another situational comparison against Spirit-scaling damage. Its Spirit Power reduction is relevant to scaling damage, not a promise to shut off every ability. It also does not silence the target or remove the need for your own durability.
Reassess when the enemy changes their build
A spirit-heavy hero can invest in weapon pressure, and a gun-focused hero can add significant spirit damage. Revisit the death pattern after major purchases. If you now survive the ability hit but die while trapped in place, control defense or movement may become the next priority.
Preserve the parts of your build that let you punish the enemy’s commitment. Surviving with no useful follow-up is not always an improvement. Coordinate utility with your teammates and buy for the fight you expect to take next.
How to choose in real matchups

If you survive her displacement but the barrels kill you, compare spirit defense rather than spending every slot on lasso answers. Separate the damage problem from the control problem.
Holliday counter guide
Thread Sap can add spirit damage to her shots. Check her build, compare the right defense and use the dedicated guide to distinguish gun pressure, melee pressure and her transformation threat.
Baba counter guideCommon defensive item mistakes
- Choosing weapon defense just because the enemy is firing a gun.
- Using a cleanse as if it reverses instant burst damage.
- Ignoring the control or positioning that lets the whole combo connect.
