How to play Calico

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Approach an exposed enemy unnoticed, deal a short burst at close range, and survive their response. You are looking for a distracted or separated target rather than starting a fight against the whole team.

Positioning

Use side routes and cover before entering combat. Ava helps you travel and hide your movement on the minimap, but enemies can still see you. Choose an approach that brings you back towards allies if the attack fails instead of trapping you behind several opponents.

How to fight

  1. Look for someone busy shooting your teammate, collecting souls alone, or using an important escape. Use Leaping Slash and Gloom Bombs when you can connect at close range, then add your weapon damage rather than immediately using every defensive tool for more burst.
  2. Keep Return to Shadows available to avoid a dangerous reply or change position. If the target survives and gains protection, leave and look for another opening. Do not assume Ava will instantly get you out after enemies have already begun damaging you.

When an enemy threatens you

Use your defensive window to move towards safety, not remain surrounded hoping the next burst wins. If you cannot reach a safe exit, stay with allies before attempting another side attack.

Calico game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and take short close exchanges only when safe. Avoid losing your health while walking through gunfire to force Leaping Slash.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Clear a nearby wave, then use a side route to threaten a separated enemy. Do not abandon income for a long search without a target.

Late game

~25+ min

Wait for teammates to occupy the enemy’s attention. Burst an exposed target, then use your defensive option before the entire team focuses you.

Tips

Good to know

  • Aim Gloom Bombs at a hero's center of mass to land all bombs within 8m.
  • Leaping Slash's dash stops on the first hero hit — angle around tanks to reach the carry.
  • Ava can slip through map vents, but don't let her timer expire inside one or you'll bleed HP.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Committing onto enemies protected by several teammates.
  • Assuming Ava is invisibility or an instant escape after taking fire.

If you’re struggling

Clear safe waves and wait for a distracted target; avoid trying to burst a healthy protected enemy.

One useful tip

Being hidden on the minimap is not the same as being invisible to enemies looking at you.

Watch for

A close hold can stop you leaving after your first attack.

Do this

Keep their position in view and preserve an exit; avoid entering beside them while they are waiting to protect someone.

WardenThreat · Lane
Watch for

A delayed catch threatens a close attack when your escape is spent.

Do this

Take a short exchange with a route out; leave before a catch forces you to remain in his preferred fight.
