Burst damage means a lot of damage lands in a short window. The fix isn't automatically buying the biggest resistance item. First, figure out what starts the combo, what type of damage finishes it, and whether you have time to respond.

A burst combo can involve weapon damage, spirit damage, crowd control or several at once. Look at the damage breakdown and what happened right before you died.
- Gun burst: A weapon-focused enemy commits to a short damage window while you're exposed.
- Spirit burst: An ability combo lands several hits before you can recover.
- Control into damage: A stun, sleep, silence or other setup leaves you unable to act while the follow-up arrives.
- Mixed burst: A hero's weapon and abilities both contribute. One type of resistance may not solve the whole problem.
This distinction matters because Metal Skin, Spellbreaker and Unstoppable are not interchangeable.
Which items help against burst damage?
Grit offers a manually timed barrier. It's useful when you can anticipate a dangerous ability or trade rather than pressing a button after the damage has already landed. An early, inexpensive defense can be enough to keep farming without abandoning your build.
Guardian Ward combines a barrier with movement help, including ally applications. Think of it as a way to change your position during danger, not just an extra health bar to stand behind.
When the same crowd-control opening keeps starting the enemy's combo, Reactive Barrier is a defensive option to investigate. Its protection is triggered by qualifying control, so confirm the actual effect that is catching you. It won't prevent every disable.
Metal Skin is worth considering when weapon damage is the main threat and you need a short window to survive it. Don't treat it as a blanket answer to spirit damage, disables or everything that happens during a teamfight.
Spirit Shielding responds to qualifying spirit damage with a barrier. Spellbreaker offers spirit defense and a safeguard against a major spirit hit. Compare the trigger and timing to the actual damage pattern; repeatedly taking small abilities and eating one huge combo are different problems.
Ethereal Shift can help you survive a predictable burst by briefly becoming invulnerable. The tradeoff is that you're spending a major defensive window; plan what your team will do while you are unavailable and where you'll stand when it ends.
What if you can't press a defensive item?
Sometimes the setup, not the damage, is the real problem. If you're stunned before you can activate an item, investigate a control-defense purchase or a safer approach to the fight. Unstoppable is proactive, while Dispel Magic has activation restrictions. Neither should be presented as an automatic cure for every crowd-control combo.
Positioning can save you more souls than a late defensive purchase. Approach with an escape, avoid crossing exposed lanes with no stamina, and wait for key enemy cooldowns before committing.
A simple burst-survival plan
- Review one death. Identify the opening effect and primary damage source.
- Choose one answer. Barrier, damage-specific defense, control prevention or an escape—not all of them at once.
- Change your timing. Save the active for the dangerous commitment instead of an ordinary poke hit.
- Fight from a better position. Keep cover or an exit available.
- Reassess after one fight. If you now live but can't contribute, you may have overinvested in defense or solved the wrong problem.
Common mistakes
- Buying bullet defense against a spirit-heavy burst combo.
- Using a defensive active when the enemy isn't committed, then lacking it for the real engage.
- Confusing a barrier with immunity to crowd control.
- Standing in the same position after surviving the first burst.
- Assuming another defensive item is always better than adjusting your route and timing.
