How to play Venator

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Keep useful gunfire on enemies while traps and wall threats make approaching you risky. You want a protected firing position and a reachable target, not a solo close catch at any cost.

Positioning

Play beside or behind your team’s first contact with nearby cover. Trap a route enemies could use to reach you, and notice walls behind potential targets. Keep a second retreat route in mind because a visible trap can be destroyed, avoided or still arming.

How to fight

  1. Use Hex-Lined Snap Trap to prepare a likely approach, then shoot enemies your team is already pressuring. Gutshot can punish someone close to a wall or create space when they reach you. Choose its direction deliberately instead of pushing a target out of allied damage.
  2. Consecrating Grenade adds useful pressure against healing and can threaten a route around cover. Use Ira Domini when an enemy is caught, retreating predictably or already occupied, rather than expecting its slower attack to solve an exposed duel by itself.

When an enemy threatens you

Use your close disruption and covered route to move back towards allies. Do not remain standing on a trap expecting it to protect you from every direction while several enemies attack.

Venator game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls from cover while preparing a trap on an approach. Watch nearby walls for a useful Gutshot rather than forcing a close duel.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Keep collecting income and prepare routes before an objective fight. Replace lost protection when enemies destroy or bypass your traps.

Late game

~25+ min

Maintain useful gunfire from a protected position. Use catches and Ira Domini when enemies are held, retreating predictably or occupied by allies.

Tips

Good to know

  • Enemies must shoot traps to disarm them — hide traps behind corners and edges.
  • Gutshot's wall stun blesses your next heavy melee at higher tiers.
  • The final Ira Domini stake is the blessed one — save it for the lowest target.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Assuming traps cannot be destroyed or bypassed.
  • Taking a close fight without a useful wall or retreat route.

If you’re struggling

Clear safe waves and protect a firing position rather than forcing an unsupported close catch.

One useful tip

A trap needs to arm and can be destroyed; it is not permission to ignore the route behind you.

Matchups to watch

AbramsOpportunity · Lane
Watch for

A direct close approach can cross a prepared trap and a useful wall angle.

Do this

Keep cover, trap the route and preserve Gutshot for the commitment instead of spending it on minor damage.

LashThreat · Teamfights
Watch for

A vertical approach may bypass the ground route your trap protects.

Do this

Watch height and keep allied help nearby; one trapped doorway does not protect every angle.

VictorOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

His close recovery-based fight gives your grenade a useful target.

Do this

Apply grenade pressure during the supported exchange and maintain a safe firing angle rather than chasing inside his aura alone.
