How to play Infernus

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Keep enemies burning while staying alive long enough to attack again. You want a sustained close-to-mid-range fight your teammates can join, rather than a single unsupported dash through everyone.

Positioning

Play near the front or side of your team with cover between shooting opportunities. Stay close enough to land repeated shots, but avoid being the first exposed target for the whole enemy team. Plan where Flame Dash can take you if the exchange becomes dangerous.

How to fight

  1. Afterburn needs repeated hits to ignite an enemy. Look for a target distracted by your teammate or unable to immediately hide; isolated single bullets may not create the burn you need. Use Napalm within its useful range to help maintain a favourable exchange.
  2. Once the enemy is burning, keep useful pressure without following them through several opponents. For Concussive Combustion, approach with timing and allied support so enemies cannot simply focus you before the explosion. Your ordinary gunfire and burns still matter when the ultimate is unavailable.

When an enemy threatens you

Use Flame Dash to leave when needed rather than saving it only for chasing. Head towards cover and teammates; do not keep running after an elevated target you cannot maintain contact with.

Infernus game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and find a covered angle for several hits that trigger Afterburn. Keep Flame Dash available if the enemy commits onto you.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Clear useful waves and camps, then join fights where you can maintain contact. Avoid spending your approach to chase into an unsupported position.

Late game

~25+ min

Approach with allies and time Concussive Combustion for the fight. Continue useful burns and gunfire without outrunning your team’s ability to help.

Tips

Good to know

  • Concussive Combustion can't be interrupted, so cast it before diving in — it detonates after the delay regardless.
  • Gun hits refresh and extend Afterburn, so keep spraying to keep the burn stacking instead of bursting and stopping.
  • Napalm's debuff makes the target take more damage from your whole team, not just you — mark the focus target.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Leaving cover without enough time to ignite an enemy.
  • Chasing through several enemies after spending Flame Dash.

If you’re struggling

Collect safe waves and join after a teammate starts the fight; avoid leading a dive you cannot sustain.

One useful tip

One occasional bullet is not the same as igniting an enemy. Seek a safe sustained shooting window.

Matchups to watch

Heroes that change how you play Infernus. Situational adjustments, not rankings.

KelvinThreat · Lane
Watch for

Maintained beam pressure makes a sustained shooting exchange harder to keep favourable.

Do this

Use cover to break the exchange and keep Flame Dash available instead of trading openly until he controls the pace.

Lady GeistThreat · Mid-game skirmishes
Watch for

A close health reversal can punish chasing a wounded-looking target.

Do this

Maintain useful shooting distance and check her reversal threat before dashing directly onto her to finish.

McGinnisOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

A prepared position can force predictable movement around walls and entrances.

Do this

Apply burns from cover while your team contests; avoid dashing past the wall into an unsupported enclosed fight.
