How to play Yamato

The full version of the quick answer.

Your goal

Use deliberate spell damage to prepare a target, then commit at close range during a strong fighting window. You want a reachable enemy and an exit, not an endless dive through the whole team.

Positioning

Play around a covered side or front edge of your team. Power Slash can pressure before you commit, while Flying Slash brings you closer and changes your escape options. Check where the enemy’s teammates are before following a target into their protection.

How to fight

  1. Take Power Slash opportunities while the enemy is distracted or moving predictably. Follow with close attacks and Crimson Slash when the exchange is safe. Use Flying Slash to reach a target your team can help attack rather than simply whichever enemy is farthest away.
  2. Shadow Transformation refreshes your fighting tools and gives you a stronger commitment window, but does not make you impossible to kill. Plan your attacks and return route before activating it. Watch its remaining duration instead of continuing deeper because a wounded enemy is still visible.

When an enemy threatens you

Move back towards allies and cover before your strong window ends. If your protection is unavailable or enemies are waiting to stop your approach, keep using safer damage until another player creates an opening.

Yamato game plan

Timings are approximate. When teams start grouping and pushing objectives, use the next phase’s advice.

Early game

~0–10 min

Collect souls and take covered Power Slash opportunities. Preserve health and avoid grappling into a protected target just because they are in range.

Mid game

~10–25 min

Look for a reachable enemy whose escape or attention is occupied. Commit near allies with a plan for when your protection ends.

Late game

~25+ min

Use your strong window for a useful close attack, then leave before it expires. Do not assume transformation prevents death or guarantees a safe chase.

Tips

Good to know

  • Power Slash deals 30%/50%/100% at blue, red, and max charge stages.
  • Dash before charging Power Slash to offset the 1.3 m/s crawl.
  • Alt-fire works even without enough ammo in the clip.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Staying surrounded after your strong defensive window ends.
  • Assuming transformation makes you impossible to kill.

If you’re struggling

Use safe spell damage and join an existing fight rather than forcing a dive without protection.

One useful tip

Shadow Transformation is a strong fighting window, not death prevention. Have a way to leave when it ends.

Matchups to watch

Heroes that change how you play Yamato. Situational adjustments, not rankings.

Grey TalonOpportunity · Teamfights
Watch for

A distracted ranged shooter can be vulnerable to a timely close approach.

Do this

Use cover and grapple only when the destination is reachable by allies; preserve your strong window for the actual fight.

Lady GeistThreat · Mid-game skirmishes
Watch for

A close finishing attempt can give her the reversal range she wants.

Do this

Account for Soul Exchange before following her low health, and keep a route back instead of committing every tool.

Mo & KrillThreat · Teamfights
Watch for

Their close control threatens an entry before your strong defensive window is established.

Do this

Track their position and avoid a blind grapple beside them; wait for allied pressure to create an opening.
